SCORING SYSTEM
To ensure games across all genres are scored fairly, and that the entirety of the /10 point system is fully utilized, the following scoring system was developed through conversations with friends and inspiration from the greats of old.
METRICS
Gameplay: 40% • How fun was the gameplay? If there is a cohesive gameplay loop, how was it?
Polish: 20% • Does the game have good polish? Do the mechanics, controls, UI, optimization, new player experience, etc. contribute to the game or take away from the game?
Aesthetics: 15% • Does the game nail the art style and direction its going for? Is it graphically gorgeous? Is it an Unreal Engine 5 mess that’s void of all art character? How are the sounds? Soundscapes, Soundtrack, battle sounds, etc.
Story: 15% • Was the story well crafted / original? Did the story get in the way? Would the game feel fully feature with a story if it doesn’t have one, or is no story good story? If there is voice acting, does it contribute to the story’s delivery or detract from it? If not, would the story land better with voice acting?
Contribution: 10% • How much does it contribute to the Genre, by nailing genre conventions and/or by innovating original ideas
We take this percentage score and divide it down to a simple 10 point system.
WHAT THE SCORES MEAN
10: Perfect
• This game is perfect in every way.
9: Grand
• This game gets incredibly close to perfection, misses by just a hair.
8: Great
• This is a truly great game, with very few details holding it back from perfection.
7: Good
• This is a good game, one you will not regret booting up, but is not without its flaws.
6: Alright
• This game is above average, and if the marks it hits are important to you, you may find a valuable time with it.
5: Mid
• This game is just okay. Nothing spectacular, but likely not a waste of time if you are willing to exercise patience with its many rough edges. However, it likely won’t convince you to play with without prior interest.
4: Subpar
• This game will require a lot of self-compromise and patience, as there are likely many fundamental issues, but all is not lost.
3: Bad
• This game has a lot more than just a rough edge; it may be sharp enough to cut you. Come well prepared for the time you will have with it, as it may feel like time wasted.
2: Horrible
• Little to no redeeming qualities. If you see this game in the street, keep walking.
1: Nope
• Hopefully you never cross paths with this title.
